Hay-on-Wye Explore Radnor and Beyond

Famous as the world’s first book town, Hay-on-Wye certainly has an abundance of bookshops, and there is plenty more to see and do to make a visit worthwhile when exploring Radnor and beyond.

Directions to Hay-on-Wye from the harp

The journey between Old Radnor and Hay-on-Wye takes about 30 minutes at a distance of 13 to 19 miles depending on the route.

The shortest, most direct way is to head south out of Old Radnor through Dolyhir, Gladestry and Newchurch. This route is via B roads which can be potholed and partially flooded after heavy rain.

An alternative route via A roads is slightly longer in distance, but takes the same amount of time. Take the A44 around Kington and onto the A4111. After Eardisley turn right onto the A438. Turn left at Clyro and follow the signs to Hay.

Parking in Hay-on-Wye

There is no shortage of visitor parking in Hay:

Market Square Car Park:
Pay and display parking for approximately 20 cars.
Closed on Thursdays for the market.
Short stay.
Good for quick access to shops and cafes.

Oxford Road Car Park:
Pay and display, much larger than Market Square.
Less than 5 minute walk to shops and cafes.

Wyeford Car Park:
Free parking for roughly 30 vehicles.
Slightly longer walk to the shops.
Can flood when the river levels are high.

In Hay you will find antiques shops, clothing shops, homeware and hardware shops, jewellery and gift stores and an abundance of galleries.

Hay-on-Wye Castle

The castle in Hay stand proudly overlooking the town and is open to visitors 7 days a week. Inside the grounds are a cafe and honesty bookshop. Have a look at their website to find out about events and exhibitions.

There are a surprising number of cafes and pubs in Hay. Have a wonder and see what takes your fancy. We tend to stop for a coffee and millionaire’s slice at Cozy Cafe followed by a pint at the Blue Boar.
